Sligo man playing in Golf’s US PGA Championship

The timesheet for second golf major of the year, the US PGA Championship at Oakland Hills shows four Irish golfers in the field: Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Padraig Harrington and Seamus Power – but another man teeing it up this week has strong Sligo connections.

Matt Cahill, who’s is head professional at the Seminole Golf Club in Florida, has qualified to play in this week’s US PGA – and his father Donal is a native of Bunninadden in Sligo.

It’s understood Cahill spent several summers holidaying in Ireland as a child and spent much of his time here honing his golf skills at Tubbercurry Golf Club in south Sligo.

Cahill finished tied for second in the recent PGA Professional Championship to qualify for this week’s Major at Oak Hill in Rochester, New York.

It’s the 31-year-old’s first major championship.

Cahill tees off in Thursday’s opening round at 7:20pm Irish time with Cameron Davis (Aus) and Taylor Montgomery (USA).
