Aughanagh Celtic relegated from Super League

Aughanagh Celtic’s stay in the Southern Hotel Super League came on an end on Thursday night’s following a 1-0 loss to Carbury FC at Ray MacSharry Park in their final league fixture of the season.

The result means the Ballinafad club are one of two teams to be automatically relegated from the top tier of junior soccer in Sligo Leitrim.

Aughanagh were facing relegation before a ball was kicked this season after a late registration for the new season saw them facing demotion from the Super League last August.

However, following an appeal, their late application to the league was accepted and Aughanagh kept their place in the Super League.

However, now they must prepare for football in the Sligo Pallets Premier League next season.

Ballisodare United will join them in the lower tier next season if they don’t beat Strand Celtic in the final league game.

Two clubs from the Super League will be automatically relegated this season – with the side that finishes third from bottom facing a promotion-relegation play-off against the third-placed team in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Strand Celtic and Cartron United book their places in the final of the Frank Kennedy Memorial Cup following semi-final victories over MCR and Ballisodare United respectively.

Strand Celtic needed extra-time to get the better off newly-crowned Super League winners MCR at Strandhill Community Park.

The Frank Kennedy final will be played this Sunday, May 21st, at Ray MacSharry Park (Kick-off: 2pm).
