Local TD calls for food prices to be reduced

A Sligo Leitrim TD is warning that the spiralling inflation in food prices along with contraction of product sizes is a perfect recipe for profiteering.

That’s the warning from Sligo Leitrim TD Marian Harkin who raised the issue in the Dáil ahead of a meeting between Supermarket representatives and Minister for State Neale Richmond on the issue today.

Grocery price inflation reached a record 16.3 per cent between November and January, according to research analysts Kantar.

It’s expected that Minister Richmond will be pressing retailers to inform consumers when prices will start coming down.

Speaking to Ocean FM News Deputy Harkin says lower income families are being hit hardest by rising food prices.
