Rooney & Holohan score in Ireland schools win



Both Summerhill College student Eli Rooney and Niall Holohan of Carrick-on-Shannon Community School scored for the Republic of Ireland schoolboys in their 2-1 victory over Northern Ireland in Belfast on Thursday evening.

The Republic, who concluded their Centenary Shield campaign following Thursday’s game took the lead on 13 minutes through an Eli Rooney header from a corner.

Northern Ireland equalised 11 minutes later however, Niall Holohan fired the ball into the back of the net with a well-taken finish to give his side the advantage once more on the stroke of half-time.

Both players started alongside Sligo Rovers under-19 teammate Daniel Kelly who is a student at Rice College in Westport.

It was the first win of the 2023 Centenary Shield for the Republic of Ireland who finish their competition with one draw (v Scotland), 2 defeats and a win.
