Summerhill win rugby’s schools junior cup title

Summerhill College junior rugby team claimed a first-ever Connacht Schools Cup title on Wednesday afternoon with an impressive 18-3 victory over Marist College, Athlone, at the Sportsground in Galway.

Tries from scrumhalf Carlos Isidro, Hugh Óg Arnold and Conor Devaney gave the College a comprehensive win – and a first ever provincial title at this age grade, in a contest which was much closer than the final scoreline would suggest.

Summerhill team manager Andrew Hall paid tribute to the players when he spoke to reporter Kevin Egan afterwards.

Wednesday final was the first of three finals in three days for Summerhill.

The under-17 team play Rice College of Westport in Thursday’s Connacht Cup decider in Athlone (12pm).

Then, on St Patrick’s Day, the college’s senior gaelic footballers contest the All-Ireland Hogan Cup final at Croke Park (1pm).
