Sligo Rovers lose 1-0 in Drogheda

Sligo Rovers suffered their first league defeat of the new season on Friday night with a 1-0 loss to Drogheda United at Weavers Park.

Former Finn Harps striker Adam Foley was the matchwinner for Drogheda, finding the Rovers net on 58 minutes with a fine finish to the top corner.

Substitute Fabrice Hartmann struck the Drogheda crossbar from a delightful free-kick on the edge of the area eight minutes later after the referee had appeared to award Rovers a penalty for a foul on the German, before changing his mind after consulting with his linesman.

That was as close as Rovers came to equalising.

Elsewhere, Johnny Kenny scored his first competitive goal for Shamrock Rovers but the champions suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Derry Celtic in Tallaght.

In the First Division, Finn Harps picked up their first point of the season with a 1-1 draw at home to Bray Wanderers.
