Mata hat-trick gives Sligo Rovers win at UCD

Max Mata scored a hat-trick, which included two penalties, as Sligo Rovers collected their first win of the new SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Premier Division season with a 3-2 win over UCD in Dublin on Friday night.

Alex Nolan gave the students an early lead before Mata struck for his first of the night to bring Rovers level.

Danu Kinsella Bishop put UCD back in front in the early moments of the second half.

Rovers were awarded a penalty on 66 minutes following a handball infringement which Mata converted.

And the Kiwi scored a second spot kick a short while later after Player of the Match Reece Hutchinson was upended in the penalty area.

Here’s the table after two games:

In the First Division, Finn Harps suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Athlone Town.

Harps had led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a Ryan Rainey goal – but Athlone struck three times in the second half to take the points.
