Attempted murder investigation launched into the shooting of an off-duty police officer in Tyrone



An attempted murder investigation has been launched after an off-duty police officer was shot at a sports complex in County Tyrone last night.

 

The senior officer was shot several times.

 

 

The PSNI have confirmed that Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell was attacked by two masked men as he was putting away training gear into the boot of his car.

 

 

Mr Caldwell is said to be in a critical but stable condition in hospital in Derry.

 

Police say the dissident Republican group, the new IRA, are the primary focus of their investigation.

 

Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA Jemma Dolan says it’s vital that anybody with information on the attack cooperates with the Police

 

 

 

The Tánaiste says the attempted murder of the PSNI officer at a sports complex in front of children ‘represents a new low’ for such criminal activity.

Micheál Martin says sadly there’s been several concerning incidents of this kind recently.
