Kinlough councillor warns of lack of Civil Defence members in North Leitrim

Concern was raised at this week’s meeting of the Manorhamilton MD Meeting of Leitrim County Council in relation to the number of Civil Defence members that are available to cover events in the north Leitrim area.

Fianna Fail Councillor Justin Warnock says with currently only 20 volunteers in Leitrim, a training and recruitment drive need to take place.

The Kinlough based Councillor says that since the Covid-19 pandemic more people are engaged in leisure activity such as hiking, and water based sports.

Cllr Warnock says there is a need for more Civil defence volunteers in the north Leitrim area that can be deployed in the case of an emergency.

He feels the fact that the majority of training for new members normally takes place in Drumshanbo is discouraging many people living in north Leitrim from taking part.
