Sligo athletes win Tony McGowan memorial half-marathon races



Sligo athletes enjoyed notable success at the 11th annual Tony McGowan Memorial Run in Drumshanbo on Sunday.

1,200 runners and walkers lined up for the 5k, 10k and half-marathon races.

The event remembers Tony McGowan, the founder of Drumshanbo Athletic club in 1980, a former Leitrim GAA county board chairman and hugely popular local community figure in the Drumshanbo area, who died in 2007.

Sligo’s Heather Foley, a former Commonwealth Games triathlete for Northern Ireland, won the women’s half-marathon race, finishing ahead of Michelle Needham and Nicola Casey.

The men’s half-marathon was won by Sligo AC’s Matthew McMeekin in a new course record time, with Barry Shiel second and James Elgar third.
