Treasure Leitrim step up efforts in fight against prospecting work



The north Leitrim community of Manorhamilton are stepping up their efforts in the fight against any prospecting work being carried out in relation to gold and silver mining in the region.

Representative of the Treasure Leitrim Group Jamie Murphy says the community opposition to the project is united and has warned that if mining was to go ahead in the area it would impact the community in Manorhamilton and further afield.

As part of their campaign local landowners are being urged to refuse representatives of the mining company involved in carrying out prospecting work can refuse to gain them access to their lands.

 

Local teacher, farmer and Agricultural spokesperson James Gilmartin is warning that there are lope holes that mining companies could use to attempt gain access to farms without the permission of the farmers.

 

He says any mining in the areas would negatively impact the water supply to large parts of the north west:
