ATU Donegal no match for DCU in Sigerson Cup opener

There was disappointment for Maxi Curran’s ATU Donegal in Tuesday evening’s Sigerson Cup round 1 game at the county GAA Centre of Excellence in Convoy as DCU ran out convincing 4-15 to 1-7 winners.

Galway’s Rob Finnerty did much of the scoring damage for DCU with a personal tally of 2-3 on the night.

The start of the game was delayed by half-an-hour while the pitch was narrowed and excess water was cleared from the sideline areas.

When the game eventually got underway, it was the visitors who looked the sharper.

Termon’s Jamie Grant started for DCU with St Eunan’s Shane O’Donnell and Glenfin’s Rob Marley introduced as substitutes.

The Sligo DCU contingent of Lee and Shane Deignan, Sean Carroll and Eoghan Smith were unused substitutes in this game.

ATU Donegal, who were missing several regulars found the going tough.

Tourlestrane’s Liam Gaughan and Killybegs Jack McSharry both got on the scoresheet for the home side but DCU on the night were dominant.

All is not lost for ATU – they now face Ulster University in a round two losers game on January 17th.

ATU Sligo are in action on Wednesday evening when Benji Drummond’s side host MTU Kerry in Ballinode at 7pm.
