Sligo Grammar School retain Schools League title

Sligo Grammar School won a third consecutive Connacht senior schools ‘A’ league rugby title on Monday with a 10-3 victory over their neighbours and town rivals Summerhill College, in the final played at Heffernan Park in Ballina.

This was the first-ever all-Sligo Connacht senior league final.

A try on the stroke of half-time from Grammar scrumhalf Gareth McGinty proved to be a key score.

Summerhill had led prior to that thanks to an Oisin O’Neill penalty – but Sligo Grammar always looked menacing in attack.

McGinty’s converted try gave the holders a 7-3 interval lead.

Three more points were added in the second half from a penalty.

Summerhill tried hard to find a way through the Grammar rearguard, but for all their possession, they were unable to make the breakthrough for a try.

After the game, Sligo Grammar captain Conor Creaven and head coach James Gavin spoke with Ocean FM Sport’s Austin O’Callaghan.
