Allocation of mica funding leads to cancelation of planed protest in Donegal

A sit-in protest by Donegal mica-affected homeowners which was due to be held at the Donegal County Council offices in Carndonagh today has been called off after campaigners said one of their main demands has been met.

The protest was cancelled after an email had been received which confirmed that 20 families will receive grant aid which will allow them to move out of their homes and into alternative accommodation.

The Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien has committed to providing funding of up to €15,000 for accommodation costs and the grant for storage costs of up to €5,000 will be made available next week for ‘a severely affected dwelling that has a Stage 1 or Stage 2 approval and is no longer habitable due to damage caused by the use of defective concrete blocks in its construction and needs to be vacated.

Lisa Hone, Chairperson of the Donegal Mica Action Group, says the funding was allocated after number of meetings with Minister O’Brien this week
