Donegal & Sligo athletes shine at National Cross Country Championships



There were some impressive performances by Donegal and Sligo competitors at Sunday’s National Senior, Junior and Even Age Group Cross Country Championships, which were held at Rosapenna Golf Resort in Donegal.

Host club Cranford Athletic club are celebrating their 60th anniversary this year – and the biggest cheer of the afternoon came at the conlusion of the boys under-16 race, as Creeslough’s Caolan McFadden crossed the line first in a Cranford AC singlet.

He was closely followed by South Sligo Athletic Club’s Francis Donoghue, who took silver.

Gearóid Tuohy from Sligo AC won gold in the boys under-14 race.

The senior men’s race was won by Irish international Darragh McElhinney – as the Kerryman claimed his first national senior cross country title.

Dromore West’s Keelin Kilrehill (Moy Valley AC) finished sixth.

UCD’s Sarah Healy won the women’s under-23 race, finishing ahead of Ciara Mageean, who ran the final lap with just one shoe.
