Late goal denies Cluainín Iomáint Leitrim hurling title

Carrick Hurling regained the Leitrim senior hurling title on Sunday in dramatic fashion with a one point win over Cluainín Iomáint at Carrick-on-Shannon, on a final scoreline of 1-12 to 1-11.

A goal from Carrick’s Carrick Moreton deep in added time was the last puck of the match and gave Carrick a dramatic one-point win.

It was cruel luck on holders Cluainín Iomáint who appeared to have one hand on the silverware again as they lead by two points with time almost up.

But Moreton’s late late show silenced the north Leitrim supporters and meant Carrick Hurling complete a memorable county hurling double this weekend with the minors lifting the under-17 title on Saturday against the same opposition.

Cluainín’s goalkeeper Peter Poniard was named Man of the Match.

Carrick Hurling manager Jamie Ward admitted his side enjoyed a large slice of luck in those dramatic closing moments.

He spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s PJ Leddy.
