Yet – the Games marked a key milestone in the career of a Leitrim distance runner and a Leitrim Athletics family.
Eddie Leddy competed in the men’s 3000 metres steeplechase that summer.
His elder brother PJ would be have been on the team as well – had it not been for foot blisters sustained midway through a men’s marathon race near Athlone.
