Brian Colsh qualifies for World Rowing Championship 1/4 finals

Sligo’s Brian Colsh made an impressive debut for Ireland at the senior World Rowing Championships in the Czech Republic on Sunday morning by qualifying directly for the quarter-finals of the men’s single sculls.

The 20-year-old from Ballymote finished third in heat two behind current Olympic champion Stefanos Ntouskos with Trevor Jones from Canada second.

The quarter-finals take place on Wednesday morning.

Colsh won a bronze medal earlier this year at the World Under-23 Rowing Championships in Italy – but this is his first foray with Ireland at senior world level.

He began his rowing career at Sligo Rowing Club at the age of just 13and was coached by his dad, Tommy, until departing for college at NUI in Galway in September 2021.

Colsh is no stranger to success having won a junior 15 title at the national rowing championships in 2017 for Sligo before being selected as part of the national junior team in 2019.

Brian gained selection for the European Junior Championships in 2020 in Serbia where the crew
performed magnificently by taking home a silver medal in the quadruple scull event, the first time anIrish junior crew had done so in an Olympic class boat at a major championship.

The 2022 World Rowing Championships are running from September 18-25th in Racice, Czech Republic.
