Free School transport not a mistake says Taoiseach



The Taoiseach is denying the waiving of school transport fees was a mistake.

 

The difficulty that parents were experiencing in securing bus tickets led to rally being held in Sligo earlier this month.

 

It’s reported Tánaiste Leo Varadkar privately told his party some sort of fee should have been maintained to avoid the service becoming oversubscribed.

 

The Irish Daily Mail says he suggested the government should instead have looked at changing voluntary contribution schemes to save parents money.

 

Thousands of children including many across the north west have been left without school bus places due to demand for the service.
