Sligo Rovers charged with fielding suspended player

The FAI has charged Sligo Rovers FC with fielding a suspended player during last Monday’s SSE Airtricity League Premier Division game against Dundalk at the Showgrounds.

Midfielder Adam McDonnell played for Rovers in their 2-0 home win when, according to the FAI’s Disciplinary Control Unit, the player was allegedly suspended.

In a statement on Monday evening, the club says it received contradictory notices regarding the player’s suspension and club officials have sought legal advice on the matter.

None of the recent League of Ireland suspension lists, which are issued to the media on a weekly basis, make any mention of a match suspension for McDonnell.

Rovers have been called to appear before the Disciplinary Control Unit this week.

If the outcome of that hearing goes against the club, they face the prospect of being stripped of the home win from the match concerned – and opponents Dundalk being awarded the points instead.
