Roscommon GAA referees to withdraw services this weekend

Roscommon GAA club referees have withdrawn their services from this weekend’s  championship games in the county, in protest at a midweek incident during an underage club fixture which resulted in a referee being hospitalised.

The alleged incident happened in Ballyforan on Wednesday evening during an under-17 game betweenSt Aidan’s and St Dominic’s with video footage of what happened circulating widely on social media.

The match referee involved, Kevin Naughton, was taken to hospital for treatment.

It’s understood he was released from hospital on Thursday.

The Roscommon Herald reported that referee representatives informed county board officials at a meeting on Thursday night of their intention to boycott this weekend’s club games.

An extensive programme of senior, intermediate and junior football championship matches was planned for this weekend in Roscommon.

In a statement on Friday afternoon, Roscommon GAA confirmed that all this weekend’s championship games were being called off.

They will be rescheduled for the weekend of September 16-18th.
