Malachy O’Rourke not in contention for Donegal manager’s job

Former Fermanagh and Monaghan senior football manager Malachy O’Rourke has ruled himself out of the running to be the next Donegal senior football manager, according to the Donegal News.

The Derrylinn native had been linked to the Donegal role following Declan Bonner’s decision to step down from the role.

O’Rourke has a strong managerial CV, having taken Fermanagh to the Ulster final in 2088 and leading Monaghan to two Ulster titles in 2013 and 2015.

He has also proven himself at club level, guiding two Derry clubs, the Loup (2003) and Watty Grahams (2021) to memorable Derry senior football championship titles.

O’Rourke also won an Ulster Club title with the Loup in 2003 – while Watty Grahams were beaten after extra-time in last December’s Ulster club final by eventual All-Ireland champions Kilcoo

A unnamed three-person selection committee has set up by the Donegal GAA Executive to find the next manager.

Kilcar’s Martin McHugh and former Donegal minor and under-20 boss Shaun Paul Barrett have been touted as potential successors in recent weeks but the county board has, to date, remained tight-lipped on contenders for the role.
