A set of proposals aimed at restoring empty homes and properties could result in the owners of derelict houses facing a 6% new property tax.

The proposal is one of number being suggested by the Hardware Association Ireland.

They aims to alleviate the housing crisis by renovating empty homes.

It estimated that there are 34,000 empty homes many of which are situated in the North West that can be renovated for a reasonable price.

There are also suggestions to make the process or renovating the buildings more affordable for first time buyers.
