Sligo sporting community pays tribute to John McGowan

There’ve been tributes across the Sligo sporting community – and beyond – to Sligo’s John McGowan, who passed away suddenly at the weekend.

He was 74.

John was a renowned sports athlete and played for Ireland at senior international basketball level – and was synonimous with the Sligo All-Stars Basketball Club for many years.

He also achieved Connacht Club Championship glory on two occasions with his beloved St Mary’s in the 1970s, as well as winning six  Sligo Senior Championships and an All-Ireland 7s title.

Former Ireland basketball international Tom Hickey described him as a genuinely down-to-earth person and a phenomenal athlete.

He paid this tribute to his friend, mentor and former team-mate on Ocean FM.

His funeral takes place in Sligo on Thursday.
