Mark English makes World Athletics Championships entrance tonight

Donegal middle-distance runner Mark English competes in his fifth World Athletics Championships tonight when he runs in the heats of the men’s 800 metres in Oregon.

The Letterkenny man runs in the fifth of six heats at 01:52am (Irish time).

The first three athletes from each heat plus the six fastest qualifier times will get through to the semi-finals.

English was actually the first Irish athlete to qualify for the World Athletics Championships, when he ran a new Irish record for the 800m in Barcelona at the end of June of last year (1.44.71)  – a run which also qualified him for the Tokyo Olympics at the time.

North Sligo Athletic Club’s Chris O’Donnell is also on the track again, when he goes in the semi-finals of the men’s 400 metres at 3.15am (Irish time).

The Grange athlete runs in heat 2 of three semi-final heats – and has been drawn in lane 2.

There is live coverage of both races on BBC TV and on World Athletics Championship livestream on YouTube.
