Speaking after his win, McDermott expressed his delight with the run.

“I was at an advantage because I was on the inside lane, the third lane, and I had everyone else outside me.

“I was careful over the last two hurdles – I was more shaky than it looked but I didn’t take any chances and I came home fine.”

This is not McDermott first world title.

He won gold in 2019 in the men’s 400m at the World Masters Championships in Poland.

McDermott will be in action again on Sunday when he teams up with Hugh McSweeney, Gerry O’Reilly and Michael Kiely in the men’s over-75 4×400 metres relay.

The Ireland team has one of the largest team competing at the World Masters in Finland this week – with 94 athletes in action.

So far, the team has won 37 medals – with four days of competition still to go.
