Local TD confirms Sinn Féin will not oppose extension of Special Criminal Court

A Sligo Leitrim TD says that although Sinn Féin will not oppose a one-year extension of the Special Criminal Court, they still have concerns over it.

The non-jury court was used to jail many Provisional IRA members during the Troubles, but is now mainly used for gangland cases.

Sinn Féin dropped its outright opposition to it last year, and will abstain in tonight’s Dáil vote.

The party’s justice spokesman, Sligo Leitrim TD, Martin Kenny, says his party still has a number of concerns in relation to the court.

Deputy Kenny says Sinn Féin expect that a current review will recommend changes in the future.
