Sligo Councillor says HAP discretion increase will not stop families from becoming homeless

A Sligo Councillor says the 15 % increase in the discretion rate for HAP payments will do little to address the number of people that are in danger of becoming homeless.

The Housing Assistance Payment discretion rate is to increase to 35 per cent from 20 per cent.

Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien signalled the move today, saying it will secure and expand more tenancies and prevent new entries to homelessness.

The Minister also says there is a need to decrease the reliance on market subsidies, but that can only be done through scaling up social housing supply.

Sligo Solidarity People Before Profit Councillor Gino O Boyle says the increase will change very little.
