Post office funding not enough says Leitrim Postmistress



A Leitrim Postmistress says funding announced to safeguard the future of Post Offices will not be enough to compensate for reduced footfall and the rising costs associated with running a post office.

 

Postmasters are set to received 30 million euro in funding to help save them from closure.

 

The plan, which will be officially announced later, will see independent post offices receive roughly 12,000 euro per year.

 

Some 875 of the country’s 900 post offices are operated by independent postmasters.

 

Drumkeerin based councillor Mary Bohan operates the local Post office in the town, she says that today’s announcement is a small recognition of the importance of post offices in rural areas:
