Irish Fishing delegation to fight for greater allocations in Europe

Sligo MEP Chris Mcmanus will host a delegation of representatives from the fishing industry and fishing communities, from around Ireland, in Brussels today and tomorrow,

The delegation is travelling to make the case at the EU Parliament for Ireland’s fishing fleet to be allocated a fair share of the fish in Irish waters.

Ireland has some of the richest fishing grounds in Europe within its Exclusive Economic Zone.

Due to the Common Fisheries Policy Irelands share of the fish and wealth from its own waters has been denied to the home-based fishing fleet and fishing communities.

Speaking to ocean FM Chris MacManus say the situation is not sustainable and goes against the wider principles of reducing carbon footprint and of the economic and social linkage between those catching the fish and the communities closest to those fishing grounds.
