Woman suffers serious leg injury on Knocknarea Mountain

A 54 year old woman was rescued from the Knocknarea Mountain in Sligo yesterday after she sustained a serious lower leg injury.

The Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team were tasked to the summit of the mountain by the National Ambulance Service to attend to the injured woman.

The area in question on the Queen Maeve trail was described by rescue personnel as ‘quite treacherous’ during the poor weather conditions.

The injured woman is believed to have been visiting Sligo from North America.

Mountain Rescue Team members were accompanied by a National Ambulance Service paramedic during the rescue operation.

The casualty was treated  for a suspected broken ankle.

The woman was stabilised and transferred from the mountain by stretcher as the Rescue Helicopter was not available at the time.

She was subsequently transferred by ambulance to Sligo University Hospital where she is being treated for  non-life-threatening injuries.
