Boyle Celtic go three points clear at the top of RDFL Premier Division

Boyle Celtic continued their pursuit of the club’s first Roscommon and District Premier Division title since the 1986-87 season with a 2-0 victory over St. John’s Athletic on Sunday afternoon.

The result ensures Boyle Celtic regain their three-point lead at the top of Roscommon and District Premier Division ahead of Ballinasloe Town with one league game remaining.

Shane Battles gave his side the lead on nine minutes with a well-struck shot from distance.

The home side were dominant throughout, held the lion’s share of possession and had several opportunities to increase their one-goal advantage.

The North Roscommon club remained patient and that patience was rewarded on 65 minutes.

Battles sent in a wonderful delivery from a corner, right-back Dessie Carlos flicked a header on which deflected off a St. John’s Athletic defender and into the back of the net.

Boyle Celtic who are also in the semi-finals of RDFL Challenge Cup re-joined the Roscommon and District League in 2017-18 following a successful spell in the Sligo-Leitrim League in which they won the Super League title on three separate occasions- 2000-01, 2013-14 and 2015-16.

After the game, Boyle Celtic player-manager Jake McCrann gave his thoughts to Ocean FM Sport’s Ronan Flanagan:
