Councillor claims latest report shows the urgency of hiring additional staff at Sligo University Hospital

A new report into Nurse staffing levels at Sligo University Hospital has found there is a ‘significant shortage of staff’ in the Emergency Department.

The review finds a minimum of 53 Whole Time Equivalent Staff are required to meet demand, or up to 80 Registered Nurses and Healthcare Assistants.

The report states the Emergency Department which was opened in 1991 has ‘structural design deficiencies’ and places a greater burden on nursing staff.

Sligo Fine Gael Councillor, Thomas Walsh says while a new modular unit has opened in recent weeks at the Emergency Department, additional staff have not be hired which, he says, is concerning.
