Councillor highlights problem for community groups hit by rising building costs

The increase in building costs is now hitting community groups across the north west who are finding that tenders submitted 12 months ago no longer cover their estimated costs.

A Sligo councillor says it’s a serious situation for both contractors and for community groups eager to get work done.

Sligo Fine Gael Councillor Gerard Mullaney says the government and EU Commission must increase budgets for community development in light of the rising costs.

He emphasised he does not want to see projects having to be retendered for but rather that there would be a percentage increase in funding to enable contractors complete jobs.
