Today’s meeting of the councillors from the Manorhamilton Municipal District of Leitrim County Council will hear a joint motion from all six councillors calling for the present Manorhamilton CCTV system be upgraded and extended to take in towns, villages and strategic locations in the North Leitrim area.
The motion has been tabled in response to a number of burglaries and attacks, including on 73-year old Tom Niland in West Sligo and on an unarmed uniformed Garda near Blacklion.
Cllr Sean McDermott says it’s also important data protection issues can be dealt with so recordings on cameras can be used.
He also said the issue is too serious for local communities to be left to fund such CCTV systems.
