GRA says attack on garda highlights dangers members face every day

The GRA has described the attack on a garda in the Loughan, Blacklion area of County Cavan as ‘horrific and vicious.’

It’s understood the garda, who was on patrol in a Garda car in the area, was doused with an accellerant.

James Morrisroe, GRA Representative for the Cavan/Monaghan Division, said this assault once again highlights the dangers faced by GRA members while on duty on a daily basis.

He said that in recent years they had seen increases in the number of assaults and the viciousness of such attacks.

He added that the circumstances of this incident were disturbing and highlighted the need for urgent legislation that acts both as a deterrent and adequate punishment for such attacks.

He said the GRA believed mandatory custodial sentences are required.

Mr Morrisroe pointed out that gardaí working alone, particularly in isolated locations need to be assured that their safety is a priority.

This, he said, has to be demonstrated by having the appropriate numbers of members on duty who have adequate transport, driver training and technology such as body cams.
