Harkin: People with disabilities facing barriers to mobility in everyday life



A Sligo/Leitrim TD told the Dail today that many people with disabilities are no longer able to afford transport costs.

Independent Deputy Marian Harkin was speaking during a debate on three support schemes for people with disabilities – schemes that opposition TD’s say are effectively suspended.

The Regional Group of Independent TDs says the Mobility Allowance and Motorised Transport Grant were withdrawn in 2013 – and there are also issues with the Disabled Drivers Scheme.

They claim people with disabilities are ‘marooned in their own homes’ as a result.
