Donegal duo sign for Sligo Rovers

Sligo Rovers have announced two further signings for their senior women’s team ahead of the club’s first season in the Women’s National League. Both players hail from county Donegal.

Gemma McGuinness from Greencastle and Ballybofey’s Caoimhe Brennan further boost manager Steve Feeney’s squad and arrive with strong football pedigree.

McGuinness, a right-sided midfielder is a former underage Ireland international and has previously played alongside new Sligo Rovers teammates Lauren Boles and Emma Hansberry.

Employed as a performance nutritionist with Sligo native Daniel Davey’s Davey Nutrition, McGuinness spent the last two years in Vietnam. Before her travels, she enjoyed a three-year spell at Derry City and was part of the Team Ireland at the 2019 Summer Universiade as an Ulster University student and represented Northern Ireland at the 2019 Turkish Cup.

McGuinness is relishing the opportunity to play in the Women’s National League, telling sligorovers.com: “I’ve never played in the Women’s National League so it’s a big opportunity for me. The first day I went to training I knew it was right.”

Caoimhe Brennan has spent the three previous season playing for the Donegal Women’s League underage teams.

A former member of Finn Valley FC, Brennan has enjoyed success at the prestigious Gaynor Cup, winning the plate in 2018 while also part of various Gaelic Games teams.

The Letterkenny Institute of  Technology student spoke of her pride at joining the Bit O’Red to sligorovers.com: “It’s an honour too because not a lot of people can say they’ve been part of the first ever Sligo Rovers Women’s National League team. It’s good that Steve had faith in me to let me express myself and play in the first team.”
