Bornacoola’s Shane starts for Ireland



Bornacoola’s Shane Mallon starts for the Ireland Under-20 Rugby Team in their Six Nations opener against Wales tonight at Musgrave Park in Cork (kick-off 8pm, live on RTÉ 2).

A centre or winger by trade, Mallon takes the number 11 jersey tonight in what will be a proud evening for both his family and the county of Leitrim.

Shane, a talented sportsman in many disciplines including previous selection on both Leitrim’s football and hurling panels at underage began his rugby career at Longford RFC before enrolling at Cistercian College Roscrea where he mastered his rugby craft.

He was a key member of both his school’s senior and Leinster underage sides in 2018, 2019 and 2020 before transferring to UCD RFC where he has brought his game on to another level.

Shane is the son of Peter and Mary Mallon. His brother Cian will be a recognisable name to Leitrim hurling supporters having featured prominently for Olcan Conway’s side in recent years, including in the recent Connacht Hurling League Shield success at the NUI Galway Connacht GAA Air Dome.
