Number of sexual assaults increase in Donegal during Pandemic



There has been a noticeable increase in the number of sexual assaults in Donegal being reported during the pandemic.

 

The most recent Joint Policing Committee heard there has been a 50% increase in reports which include rape.

 

The Chief Superintendent in Donegal, Terry McGinn has confirmed that she will be moving more resources into the unit that deal with these cases as a response.

 

It will not mean new officers, instead Gardaí will be redeployed from other units.

 

The meeting also heard there has been an exponential increase in fraud related crimes as well as a noticeable drop in burglaries and thefts.

 

Drink driving offences have increased since the lifting of restrictions in October.

 

Fatal road traffic collisions are also reported to be down.
