St Farnan’s bow out of Connacht after extra-time

There was extra-time heartbreak for St Farnan’s of Sligo in Saturday’s Connacht intermediate club football semi-final as they were beaten by Roscommon champions St Faithleach’s at Dr Hyde Park on final scoreline of 1-12 to 1-11.

The sides finished level at 1-9 a-piece at the end of normal time.

Ciaran Murtagh’s first-half goal gave the Ballyleague men an early first-half advantage but from the water break onwards, Farnan’s gradually edged their way back into the game.

The west Sligo men trailed by one point at half-time (1-4 to 0-6) and continued to impress with the aid of a strong breeze at their backs in the second half to eventually force extra-time (1-6 to 0-9).

Paddy O’Connor struck for a goal for St Farnan’s in the first period of extra-time but Faithleach’s responded with a series of points to level matters at 1-9 each at half-time in extra-time.

In the final 10 minutes, the home side edged in front – and eventually won by 1-12 to 1-11.
