Mayo v Donegal league game set for Markievicz Park

Mayo’s opening Allianz Football League Division 1 match against Donegal in the New Year is set to be played at Markievicz Park in Sligo.

The fixture is a home game for James Horan’s side but with McHale Park in Castlebar undergoing a surface upgrade, and no other venue in the county deemed big enough to host a Division 1 league fixture, the match is going to be staged at Markievicz Park.

While the fixture list for the league programme is still being finalised, Sligo’s opening Division 4 game is set to be away for home so Markievicz will be available for the Division 1 encounter.

Croke Park is set to publish the official fixture list for all four divisions in the coming days – but it’s understood that Declan Bonner’s Donegal will have four home matches in Division 1.

The fixture with Mayo will be on the opening weekend of the league, on Sunday, January 30th.

Mayo were promoted from Division 2 last season having been relegated the previous year after a 23-year stay in the top tier.

Leitrim and Sligo will face each other in Division 4 in 2022 – that game is set to happen in the seventh and final round of the NFL.
