Owners of vacant commercial buildings in Sligo could be facing penalties

Sligo Councillors are expected to decide on Monday the levy of refunds on vacant commercial properties.

The Statutory Budget meeting for 2022 will take place on Monday next at 10 a.m.

With a substantial number of vacant properties (estimated to be in the region of 500) located right across the county it now seems likely that Councillors will agree on imposing a levy on commercial buildings.

Solidarity People before Profit, Gino O’ Boyle, says that Sligo has one of the highest rates of vacant commercial property in the country.  He says it’s an issue that must be tackled and the level must be reduced.

Councillor O’ Boyle feels alternative uses can be found for many of the buildings in question particularly with the demand for accommodation in the county at an all-time high.
