Leitrim councillors have differing opinions on rates hike despite agreeing to 3% rise

A North Leitrim councillor and businessman says he believes now is the wrong time for the council to have agreed to increase commercial rates.

Manorhamilton-based Independent Councillor Felim Gurn was speaking after councillors agreed to increase rates by 3%,

Councillors were told more than €25m would be required to match-fund projects in areas throughout County Leitrim worth a total of €345m as part of a capital investment programme that’s in the council’s budget.

Cllr Gurn says the fact that Covid cases are now increasing in Leitrim again just shows the uncertain times in which rates-paying businesses are having to operate.

Another north Leitrim councillor says the rate increase agreed by the council this week was ‘a significant step in moving the county forward.’

Fine Gael Councillor Sean McDermott says money has to spent in an effort to develop the county.
