CAP sheep money ‘enough to buy bag of nuts for a ewe’

The Leitrim-based vicechairman of the IFA sheep committee is criticising agriculture minister Charlie McConalogue over what he says is the lack of funding for sheep farmers under the new phase of the Common Agricultural Policy.

It’s despite funding for farmers under the new CAP set to rise by almost 50 per cent.

Just under 4 billion euro in fundiComiskey,ng for rural development will be available between 2023 and 2027, up from 2-point-7 billion euro compared to the previous period.

But Kevin Comiskey says payments under the Sheep Improvement Scheme had remained at 10 euro a head, despite farmers having sought 30 euro.

He says it’s about enough for farmers to buy a bag of nuts for a ewe at Christmas.
