Uproar at Donegal County Council meeting during Mica debate

Uproar erupted at a Donegal County Council meeting this morning during heated debated on the ongoing MICA scandal.

The meeting, which is taking place online, has now been adjourned to 1:30pm.

In the runup to coming budget, the issue of compensation for householders affected by defective MICA blocks is becoming more contentious in a number of counties, including Mayo and Sligo, but none more so than in County Donegal.

And it was during a debate on the issue at this morning’s meeting of Donegal County Council that tempers flared during an emotional debate.

Independent Councillor for Lifford-Stranorlar Frank McBrearty had been demanding answers from the council on a motion related to the MICA scandal and the purchase of materials from quarries.

Cllr McBrearty, who was accused of disruptive behaviour, was asked to leave the meeting but he refused to do so, demanding an apology from another councillor over a derogatory reference made to him.

There was then a 10-minute adjournment to allow matters cool down.

The meeting resumed but it was later decided to adjourn until 1:30pm.
