Major local issues need to be addressed in Health Service

A Sligo/Leitrim TD says the government needs to address a range of issues in the health service along with any bonus being considered.

Sinn Fein TD, Martin Kenny says Sligo and Letterkenny University Hospitals, for example, do not have the capacity to meet the needs of the population.

He says most hospitals internationally aim to have their capacity at 70% maximum, so as they have sufficient resources to deal with a major surge of patients.

Deputy Kenny says Irish hospitals operate at close to 100% capacity most of the time and sometimes exceeding that.
