Strategy needed to tackle fuel poverty ahead of winter months

A Leitrim Councillor says a fuel poverty strategy is needed as a matter of urgency following 30 price hikes in energy costs since the start of the year.

Minister for the Environment, Eamon Ryan says the energy supply in Ireland will be ‘very tight’ for the next few years.

Eirgrid are to publish a report this week warning the electricity system is being stretched beyond its limits.

Bord Gais have recently announced price increases from October 24th.

It is the second time they have increased gas prices and the third time they have increased electricity prices since the beginning of this year.

The company says the rises are down to an ‘all time high’ cost of energy which will see electricity costs increase by around 10% and gas by 12%

Councillor Fallon says the government need to address fuel poverty ahead of the winter months.
