Fines may be on the way for companies with gender pay difference

A Sligo councillor is backing calls from the National Women’s Council which is urging fines be introduced on businesses with a gender pay gap.

Sligo Drumcliffe Independent Councillor Marie Casserly says the issue has been allowed to drag on too long.

Under new legislation currently being reviewed by the President, large businesses will have to declare gender pay differences that exist within their company.

Cllr Casserly says it will initially only apply to companies with 250 employees or more but will be extended to smaller companies in the future.
