Major EU vote on fishing fund to take place today

Fishermen from Donegal will be waiting to see the outcome of an EU vote that could pave the way for a new fund that will benefit European Fishermen.

MEPs are expected to give the go-ahead to six billion euro fund.

The vote in Strasbourg is taking place this lunchtime with the result expected to be announced later.

The new fund will run until 2027, and is hoped the money will encourage more environmentally friendly fishing.

Midlands North-West MEP, Colm Markey says the Irish fleet has had a tough time and he hopes the funding will help ensure a more sustainable future.
